Parenting can be a full-time job in its own right. Unfortunately, it’s a job that doesn’t provide a paycheck. When so much of your time is dedicated to caring for children, you may feel like there are no options that will let you stay home and raise your children while earning money.

But it is possible to be a full-time parent and an active contributor to household income.

The Unique Situation

Although the number of opportunities for working from home is constantly growing, not all of them are well suited for a stay-at-home parent. For example, many telecommuting jobs still require full-time workloads, traditional schedules, or the expectation of being available whenever their boss feels it’s necessary.

Parents who work from home ideally need an opportunity with some unique features:

A flexible schedule. Some parents have children too young for school, so they need to only work during the evening and on weekends. Other parents have school-aged children who have extracurricular activities that require parent involvement. And no matter the parenting situation, children could unexpectedly get sick at any time. Parents, above all else, need the flexibility in their work schedule, so they can be parents first.

A supportive environment. When parents are working from home, they often miss out on the camaraderie and sense of community that comes with a traditional work arrangement. Parents who work from home should be working for themselves, but never by themselves. Being part of a community of like-minded individuals would keep them motivated, engaged, and provides the feedback and accountability that are often missed when working from home.

A scalable workload. Just as parents who work from home need schedules that work around their parental duties, their workload should as well. Parents should take on partial workloads so they can dedicate time to children during crucial developmental periods, and scale up the work as children become more independent or are occupied with school and activities. When children are old enough to no longer need constant care, a scalable opportunity can even turn into a full-time endeavor.

A reliable paycheck. Parents may hesitate to take a work-from-home opportunity because they worry they will not make enough money to support their families or significantly contribute to their finances. They need opportunities that provide multiple ways to earn income, rather than just relying on selling a single product or focusing on one type of task. That way, they can be rewarded for their efforts in a way that reflects the work they put in.

The ability to be a part of something greater. It’s hard to stay engaged with work that you’re not truly passionate about–that’s magnified even more when you are working from home. It’s important to find a company to work for that offers a sense of community and the opportunity to be a part of a greater mission. This makes work much more satisfying and sparks passion, which is often difficult to do through a work-from-home opportunity.
